St Albans City mourn long-term fan who died after falling off roof at club’s home

ST ALBANS CITY are in mourning following the death of long-term fan Clive Churchhouse, who fell from a roof at the club’s Clarence Park home.

The Saints’ scheduled friendly against Luton Town on Tuesday night was cancelled after an incident at the ground in the morning.

It was later revealed that Churchhouse, a familiar face around the club, had fallen off a roof just after 10am and ambulances were called to the National League South club’s home.

Despite the paramedics’ best efforts, the 71-year-old passed away from his injuries after being airlifted to St George’s Hospital in London.

Born in St Albans, Churchhouse did a number of jobs for his local club and had been involved for over 50 years.

St Albans chairman Lawrence Levy said: “We are all completely devastated by the news. Clive was a much loved character around the club with a big personality who regularly helped out at the ground and on away trips with the team.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Valerie, daughter Sallyann, son Keith and his grandchildren as well as his wide circle of friends at this very sad time.”

Herts Police and St Albans council are investigating his death with the Herts Advertiser reporting Churchhouse had been helping fix the roof of the club’s stand when he fell.

Herts Police told the paper: “Police were called by the ambulance service at 10.22am today (Tuesday) to reports that a man had fallen from the roof of a building in Clarence Park.

“His next of kin are aware and are being supported by officers. The death is being treated as non-suspicious and officers are preparing a file for the coroner.”
