Torquay United boss Gary Owers: “We’re not rubbish any more”

boss Gary Owers has said his side “aren’t rubbish any more” after they edged past last night.
The strugglers, who hadn’t won on the road all season before their trip to Fleet, secured three points thanks to Jamie Reed’s second goal in as many games.
Despite still being joint bottom of the league with , last night’s win means the Gulls are just four points off safety, and understandably, Owers is delighted.
The former manager told BBC Devon: “We looked much more solid, much more organised, we dealt with dangerous situations and were still a threat at the other end.”
After a disastrous start to the season, which saw lose his job, Torquay have picked up nine points from their past four games, having taken just four points from their previous 13.
Owers hopes United’s latest win will silence the critics, saying: “We’re tarred with this ‘we’re bottom of the league, we’re rubbish’. Well, we’re not rubbish any more – we’re getting there.

“The lads are realising what we need to do to get out of this situation, all we could do tonight was come here and win and we’ve done it.
“We’re not in a position where we’ll get carried away, it’s going to be a long process, it’s going to take a couple more weeks to improve our position.
“But coming off the back of a defeat against Dover and defeat at Aldershot and looking at two away games at Halifax and Ebbsfleet, we had it all to do, and we’ve done it.”
