National League side Torquay United have made an ambitious offer to sign former Marseille and France under-21 striker Guy Gnabouyou, according to BBC Sport.
The 27-year-old, who started his career at Marseille 12 years ago, played five times at the Stade Vélodrome and was most recently playing for Finnish side Inter Turku – a team he represented in the Europa League.
Gnabouyou also played 11 times for the France Under-21 side between 2009 and 2011, and after scoring twice in a friendly for Torquay, Gary Owers has said a deal could happen for the striker who has been on trial at Plainmoor.
“We’ve not agreed terms, so there’s still quite a bit of work to do, but it’s something that’s ongoing,” said the Gulls boss.
“He’s mobile, he’s athletic, he’s quick and looking at his stuff, which I did do before I invited him over, he looks like he can finish if he gets a chance.”
Having scored just twice in their last six games, and 17 all season – the lowest tally in the National League – Torquay are in desperate need of a goal threat.
As well as Gnabouyou, Owers says Torquay have shown an interest in a striker playing for an English club, saying: “The money’s down and the ball’s in the court of the club that’s received the offer.
“It’s a process so let’s see where it goes in the next couple of days.
“It is someone that’s attracting a lot of attention, it is someone who’s scored lots of goals in the last couple of seasons.”
