GARY MILLS has left his position as manager of Wrexham with the Dragons struggling in their ninth season as a Non-League club.
Mills, who won a promotion and FA Trophy double while manager of York City, took charge of the north Wales outfit in April 2015, turning down Tranmere Rovers.
Known for his teams’ attractive style of play, Mills led the Dragons to eighth last season but they missed out on the play-offs by 11 points.
Mills brought in a raft of new signings in the summer but they have started the new campaign slowly and are currently 15th in the National League, nine points off the top five.
The Dragons were booed off by their own fans following the goalless draw against cross-border rivals Chester last month and Mills’ side have struggled for goals.
The boss bemoaned his lack of resources following the 2-0 defeat at Tranmere on Saturday but the Wrexham board have decided the club had not made enough progress in Mills’ time in charge.
A club statement read: “Wrexham AFC today announces the departure of first team manager Gary Mills from the football club.
“Everyone at the club would like to thank Gary for his endeavours during his time at Wrexham AFC, having arrived at the Racecourse with the reputation of his teams playing open, attacking and attractive football, and previous success in gaining promotion from the Conference.
“This was a difficult decision but despite some exciting and entertaining football last season, our main priority is promotion back to the Football League and we have not made the progress expected towards that aim, falling short of the play-off places last season, and currently out of touch with the table leaders with a third of the season already gone.
“We have therefore made the difficult decision that a change is needed. Joey Jones, Andy Davies and Dean Keates will take charge of team affairs for this weekend’s visit to Stamford AFC.”
Mills has been linked with a return to York with the Minstermen searching for a new boss following Jackie McNamara’s resignation.
