FOREST GREEN ROVERS have added competition to their goalkeeping ranks with the signing of ex-Bordeaux youngster Simon Lefebvre.
The 19-year-old had spent time on trial with Championship club Birmingham City this summer but Rovers boss Mark Cooper swooped after the Blues didn’t offer the stopper a deal.
At 6ft 8ins, Lefebvre is an imposing figure and comes with good pedigree having spent five years with French outfit Bordeaux and was promoted to the first team squad last season.
Lefebvre, who played the first half of Monday’s friendly with Slimbridge, will compete with Jonny Maxted and the returning Sam Russell for the number one jersey at the New Lawn.
Rovers boss Mark Cooper told the club’s website: “I saw him play twice, once for Birmingham, and once for Kidderminster. He went away with Birmingham U21s with my son and did very well apparently.
“They’ve decided not to take him for some reason and we were looking for a third goalkeeper so it was too good an opportunity to turn down.
“He’s big at 6 foot 8, very good with his feet, and good with his hands as well. He’s a very interesting signing for us.
“For training it is important to have three keepers because if one goalkeeper is playing then we need another two for when we play small sided games. He’s going to push the two other boys for a spot in the team.”
