Yeovil Town are making headlines around the world this weekend after their ball boys were sent off during their win over National League leaders Bromley!
Media outlets and newspapers from the UK’s The Sun to The Sydney Morning Herald down under carried the story of the bizarre end to Saturday’s 3-1 victory, which in future can be capitalised on with this sky bet promo code sign up offer, after referee Aaron Johnson showed the red cards to all eight ballboys for “time-wasting”.
Johnson had sent off one boy for not returning the ball to a Bromley player fast enough 10 minutes from time and the others soon followed, obliging the official to run to retrieve at least one miscued ball at Huish Park himself!
The bemused Glovers and fans took to social media to debate the incident, pictured. “The referee has, no joke, just sent off one of our ball boys…” said Yeovil in a Twitter post on Saturday, which was retweeted by more than 2000 users, before adding: “Update: he’s dismissed all of them.”
BBC Somerset commentator and NLP writer Chris Spittles told his listeners: “One ball boy delayed giving the ball back to Bromley’s Sam Wood about 10 minutes from the end and was warned by the referee.
“But when the same ball boy repeated the trick shortly after the referee asked for them all to be removed. One steward was tasked with gathering them all in and leading them away down the tunnel. I’ve never seen anything like it.”
Saturday’s clash was always likely to be memorable even before the ballboys got into trouble after Yeovil striker Rhys Murphy and Bromley goalkeeper Mark Cousins collided in the second minute and both had to come off.
Cousins suffered a slight concussion and his departure for hospital meant defender Chris Bush had to keep goal for the rest of the match as Bromley didn’t have a substitute goalkeeper. It didn’t work as Bromley conceded three times and suffered their first defeat of the season.
