RAMSBOTTOM UNITED are hoping their new managerial team of Paul Fildes and Mark Fell can match the success of former joint-bosses Anthony Johnson and Bernard Morley.

The ex-Rams duo took the club from the to the NPL Premier in their five years in charge before moving to Salford City, where they have experienced back-to-back promotions.

However, since their departures in January 2015, Ramsbottom have struggled and last season they suffered their first relegation in the club’s 50-year history.

Garry Vaughan resigned as Rams boss at the end of the season and chairman Harry Williams had been taking his time, making sure the right appointment was made.

And on Friday morning it was announced that Fildes and Fell would be joining forces to try and take United back up to Step 3 at the first time of asking.

Chairman Williams said: “We had over 30 applications for the position, which reflects well on the club.

“After creating a shortlist and interviewing some very strong candidates, we felt that these two had the hunger and desire to take the club forward and produce the style of and entertainment which should see the locals coming back in numbers.

“Having sampled a couple of seasons in the Northern Premier, we are, of course, keen to return but no pressure will be put on Paul and Mark. We just want them to reverse the club’s fortunes and push on. I have every confidence that they will do so and look forward to working with them both.”

Fildes, 35, played as a striker for the likes of AFC and before taking the managerial reins at North West Counties League Premier side last season.

He is joined at Rammy by Fell, who himself is a former Nelson boss and currently head of sport at Accrington and Rossendale College.

Fell said: “I’ve know Paul for a long time and we will undoubtedly compliment each other with our approaches.  The position represents a great opportunity for us both to work in the Evo-Stik League and we are keen to repay the faith shown in us by the committee.

“Our dealings with the club so far have been extremely professional and the club clearly match our ambition as young managers with a passion and desire to progress.”
